Robert Lee Pettit Jr. was born on December 12, 1932, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was the son of Robert Lee Pettit Sr. and Mary Alice Pettit. Pettit began playing basketball at an early age and quickly developed into one of the top players in the state. He led his high school team to two state championships and was named the state's Player of the Year in 1951.

After graduating from high school, Pettit attended Louisiana State University (LSU). He played varsity basketball for the LSU Tigers for three seasons and helped lead the team to two Southeastern Conference (SEC) championships. Pettit was named the SEC Player of the Year in 1954 and was a consensus All-American in 1955.

In 1954, Pettit was selected by the St. Louis Hawks with the second overall pick in the NBA draft. He quickly became one of the top players in the league and helped lead the Hawks to two NBA championships in 1958 and 1960. Pettit was named the NBA MVP in 1956 and 1959 and was a 11-time NBA All-Star. He was also named to the NBA's 50 Greatest Players in 1996.

In 1963, Pettit was traded to the Milwaukee Bucks. He played for the Bucks for two seasons before retiring in 1965. Pettit finished his career with averages of 26.4 points and 16.2 rebounds per game.

After retiring from basketball, Pettit worked as a television commentator and a businessman. He was also inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 1970 and the FIBA Hall of Fame in 2007.
