In 44 BC, Julius Caesar was assassinated. Augustus Caesar was named as his heir, and he took the name Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus. Octavian joined forces with Mark Antony and Lepidus to form the Second Triumvirate. The triumvirs defeated Brutus and Cassius, the assassins of Julius Caesar, at the Battle of Philippi in 42 BC.

After the Battle of Philippi, Octavian and Antony divided the Roman Empire between them. Octavian received the west, while Antony received the east. Octavian gradually consolidated his power in the west, and he defeated Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium in 31 BC.
