Archimedes was an ancient Greek mathematician, physicist, and astronomer who lived in the 3rd century BC. He is considered one of the greatest mathematicians of all time, and his work has had a profound impact on the development of science and engineering.

Early Life and Education

Archimedes was born in Syracuse, Sicily, in 287 BC. His father, Phidias, was an astronomer and mathematician. Archimedes showed a talent for mathematics at a young age, and he studied under the tutelage of Euclid in Alexandria, Egypt.

Career

Archimedes returned to Syracuse after completing his studies, and he quickly gained fame for his mathematical abilities. He invented the Archimedes screw, a device used to pump water, and he developed a method for calculating the volume of a sphere. Archimedes also made important contributions to geometry, including the discovery of the Pythagorean theorem.

In addition to his work in mathematics, Archimedes was also a skilled engineer. He designed and built weapons for the city of Syracuse, including catapults and siege towers. Archimedes's inventions helped to defend Syracuse against a Roman invasion in 214 BC.

Death

Archimedes was killed by a Roman soldier during the siege of Syracuse in 212 BC. According to legend, Archimedes was so engrossed in his work that he did not notice the Roman soldiers entering the city. When a soldier Free Downloaded him to come with him, Archimedes refused, saying, "Do not disturb my circles!" The soldier then killed Archimedes with his sword.
