John Henry was foaled in 1975 at Calumet Farm in Kentucky. He was sired by Ole Bob Bowers and out of Once Double. John Henry was a small horse, standing only 15.3 hands high, but he was a fierce competitor with a remarkable will to win.
John Henry began his racing career in 1977. He won his first race at Churchill Downs and went on to win several more races that year. In 1978, John Henry won the Flamingo Stakes and the Blue Grass Stakes, two of the most prestigious prep races for the Kentucky Derby. He finished third in the Kentucky Derby, but came back to win the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.
John Henry continued to race successfully for several more years. He won the Woodward Stakes in 1981 and 1984, the Jockey Club Gold Cup in 1981 and 1982, and the Santa Anita Handicap in 1982 and 1984. He was also named Horse of the Year in 1981 and 1984.
John Henry retired from racing in 1985. He was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1990. He died in 2003 at the age of 28.
