About the Author

Walter Dean Myers was an American author who wrote over 100 books for children and young adults. He was best known for his novels about urban life and social issues, such as Dope Sick.

Myers was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia, in 1937. He grew up in Harlem, New York City, and attended public schools there. After graduating from high school, Myers served in the U.S. Army. He then worked as a social worker and a teacher before becoming a full-time writer.

Myers's novels have been praised for their realism, honesty, and compassion. He has won numerous awards for his work, including the Newbery Medal, the Coretta Scott King Award, and the National Book Award.

Myers died in 2014 at the age of 76.
